Ms. Krutika Vyas, an innovator and leader in the field of Information Security and Management and a Security Professional at Confluent, talks about the excitement and challenges involved in building solutions that can solve real-world challenges. At IBM Trusteer, she utilized cutting-edge technology and machine learning to protect customer assets and combat fraudulent transactions for major financial institutions in the US and globally. At Confluent, she continues her mission to ensure the security of the company’s real-time data streaming platform while expanding her knowledge of different sectors and their unique security challenges.
Ms. Krutika Vyas was part of IBM Trusteer’s pioneering team in the US, dedicated to detecting and preventing large-scale fraud using cutting-edge technology and machine learning. At IBM, she showcased a unique understanding of customer behavior and the importance of building secure products. Working cross-functionally with data science, product, and sales teams, she addressed the latest threat vectors in financial malware and fraud analytics, documenting use cases, conducting discovery workshops, and demonstrated the business value of the technology.
Selected to work at the IBM Research Lab in Tel Aviv, Israel, she led projects on financial fraud involving phishing and malware attacks. Her efforts resulted in new product features that kept pace with evolving threat vectors, positioning IBM Trusteer as an industry leader with a 156% ROI and a 90% reduction in fraudulent transactions.
She began her journey with a focus on information security and cloud computing, followed by internships at Apple and Amazon. At Apple, she designed a ticketing system for iTunes, and at Amazon, she led security initiatives to protect customer PII and financial data. During her undergraduate studies, she designed self-service chatbots and recommendation systems for educational institutions and public transit locations.
With a Master’s in Information Management from the University of Washington, she gained expertise in the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and worked with Dr. Barbara Endicott-Popovsky on aligning cybersecurity activities with business requirements. At IBM, she discovered the power of machine learning in detecting financial fraud by analyzing extensive datasets and recognizing patterns.
An advocate for leveraging AI in banking, she received the prestigious Gwennie Award in 2024 for her contributions to Confluent’s product security team. Active in the Women in Engineering community, she also judges at the Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair, promoting critical thinking and technology research among students.
Passionate about empowering women, she is launching an initiative to provide cybersecurity education to young girls in Rajasthan, fostering socioeconomic growth and equal opportunities. She collaborates with industry professionals and start-up founders, sharing her experience and mentoring through the First Round Capital mentorship program.
