Healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege - Mr. Mandhir explains his journey in Elevance Health
Mr. Mandhir, a Senior Engineering Lead at Elevance Health, one of the largest healthcare insurance providers, understands this struggle well. He has worked on multiple projects to make healthcare more transparent, efficient, and affordable. His mission is driven by a desire to make a real difference.
Growing up in a remote village in Punjab, India, he faced significant challenges accessing healthcare. People had to travel long distances and spend much of their savings on medical care. He vividly remembers the distress when his father was hospitalized and his mother had no way to get timely updates. This experience inspired him to find solutions for families in similar situations.
He earned a Bachelor of Technology degree and started his career in technology. During his tenure at Infosys, he worked on a project for Anthem, one of the largest insurance providers in the USA. This gave him great insight into the American healthcare system. When he moved to the U.S. to work on technology projects, he noticed the lack of transparency in healthcare costs. For example, the price of a simple imaging procedure for his pregnant wife varied greatly between providers, ranging from $100 to $800. This inconsistency made him question why healthcare is so unpredictable.
His determination for affordable healthcare grew stronger. He developed the Health Operating System (Health OS) to integrate patient information from various sources, making healthcare more coordinated and efficient. He also created the Whole Health Index (WHI) to include social and behavioral factors in patient care, focusing on prevention to reduce costs. His innovations in digitally enabled healthcare, such as telemedicine and remote monitoring, made it easier for patients to access care without traveling.
His expertise in healthcare technology promises more affordable healthcare, but challenges remain. Integrating different health record systems, maintaining quality and security, and addressing health disparities are ongoing efforts. Despite these challenges, his dedication and innovation offer hope for a future where quality healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege.
