Growing up in the small village of Satmile, Coochbehar District, West Bengal, India, Amal Roy worked on his family farm before and after school to help his family. After joining college, he was always thinking of innovative ideas to change the drudgery of the farmers, since it was here that he had undergone his first working experience and very much understood their plight and difficulties inside out. Since then, he worked towards development of practical solutions for small-scale farmers.
In 2001, he took over the reins of Satmile Satish Club “O” Pathagar & got it registered as a NGO under West Bengal Societies Registration Act. Initially SSCOP was organizing social and cultural events, sports activities etc. but with Amal as the Secretary, it started playing a bigger role in the community through various activities to empower the villagers and combat the continuous cycle of poverty, backwardness and illiteracy. He with his team strengthened and facilitated the grassroots level community institutions like Self Help Groups, Farmer Producer Organizations by creating convergences with Government, International agencies and Corporate for holistic development of the rural communities thereby creating Institutions at the bottom of the Pyramid.
Having done with the basics, Amal Roy looked upon to the next level and created some very innovative agriculture and allied businesses and services which are the most unique to India and these primarily address the issue of livelihood through Conservation Agriculture and Allied activities like Fisheries, Duck Rearing, Poultry, Piggery thereby creating incomes for the rural poor. His initiatives have created a huge pool of rural entrepreneurs and especially women entrepreneurs who are now generating sustainable and profitable incomes, and are contributing to the overall development of the District and the State.
