Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta is an author, award-winning architectural journalist, curator, and editor, based in Bangalore, India. Her professional journey of fifteen years has seen global collaborations in various capacities with multimedia publication houses, firms, organizations, and educational institutions affiliated with architecture, design, and building in India, the UK, the US, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, Singapore, Karachi, and Canada. She is well-traveled and explores her academic background of architecture and journalism (B.Arch, Chandigarh College of Architecture – 2005; Diploma in freelance journalism, UK) in diverse roles—that of conducting and curating/writing architecture and design content and discourses, professional speaking, conducting workshops and masterclasses and consulting for academic and professional industry initiatives.
Architecture is the science, art, and technology of designing buildings and cities. It affects the way society develops and represents it. The lack of a common language to talk about the built environment makes the profession less understood, where architectural writing steps. By writing about the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) industry, Apurva endeavors to identify, interpret, and celebrate the built environment and provide visions to create demand for better buildings, leading to better societies and better living environments.
Apurva has been persistently taking initiatives to increase the visibility of architecture-design writing in India — from conceptualizing the country’s first magazine issue solely dedicated to architectural journalism to delivering orations and conducting workshops on architectural writing to curating a national level essay writing competition for architectural students in India to convening a conference on the same. Presently, she is also involved in conceptualizing, curating, mentoring, and conducting a certified online course on architecture writing.
Apurva has been invited by the Australian and Finland Governments to represent the Indian delegation in International Media Visits of Architectural Writers in Melbourne (2016) and Helsinki (2018). Her book, ARCHITECTURAL VOICES OF INDIA: A Blend of Contemporary and Traditional Ethos(2017), published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK, initiates a discourse on architecture by 19 of India’s acclaimed architects and has received comprehensive coverage in media globally.
For her pioneering work in architectural writing in India, Apurva has received awards from the architecture & design industry in India for Excellence in Architectural Journalism(2015);Creative Excellence in Architectural Journalism(2010), and A3F award in Architectural Journalism(2009). She has also been featured across leading architectural publications and dailies.
Through her contribution, Apurva wants to highlight architectural writing as the medium to disseminate, critique, and create a demand for better architecture for society.
