Contribution Towards Protection Of The Environment
Dr. Girija Bharat exemplifies an empowered and dynamic woman who is rendering contribution to improvement and protection of our environment, aiming to achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Mu Gamma Consultants Pvt Ltd (MGC) that she has founded conducts research, consultancy services, advocacy and outreach activities in environmental pollution and sustainable development. MGC consists of a team of highly motivated professionals who are deeply interested in sustainable social and economic development within and outside India. MGC is leading a number of projects and programs of national and international significance in the areas of: Water Resource Management, Water Supply and Sanitation, Chemical Pollution Control, Plastic Waste Management, and Climate Change. Dr Girija is also the Director of Alluvium Consulting India- an Australian company based in India.
Dr Girija did a Ph.D. in Chemistry in Water Quality from LIT Nagpur in 1996 and is an alumnus of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Utkal University, Odisha, and has been one of the recipients of IIM Bangalore-Goldman Sachs 10K Women Entrepreneur Programme in 2021. Dr Girija Bharat started her career as a Scientist with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1989, after graduating from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. In the year 2007, she joined George Mason University (GMU), USA as a Presidential Fellow. In the year 2009, she joined The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) as Fellow and Area Convenor and had a distinguished career till 2015. In 2015, she joined USAID as an International Consultant (2015-2016) for Governing for Growth of Georgia (G4G). In 2016, she joined the World Bank as a Consultant and continues to offer consultancy services to GIZ and TERI.
The efforts of Dr. Girija and her team have enabled Mu Gamma Consultants to win many accolades and achievements including the Global Environment Award 2020, Aqua Excellence Award 2020 and many more. Dr Girija was awarded the prestigious ‘Exceptional Women of Excellence’ by Women Economic Forum in 2019.
Dr Bharat says: “Entrepreneurship has enhanced my creativity, independent thinking with regard to project implementation, publication or designing research ideas, while attending to family needs.”
Dr Girija has drafted the National Policy of India on Safe Reuse of Treated Water. She is a Research Council Member of CSIR-NEERI and a Member of Chemical and Waste Management Directorate, under Stockholm Convention for Asia Region since 2018. She has authored over 85 international and national publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Environment International, Science of Total Environment, Science Development Network, etc. She is fluent in six languages including English, Hindi, Malayalam, Oriya, Bengali, and Sanskrit.
Though MGC is a very new organization, it is steadily growing every year. Dr Bharat is confident to make the growth curve steeper over the next few years in terms of research outcomes, publications, revenue generation, and job creation, thereby leading to cleaner environment, and improved quality of life (QoL) of people and communities.
